20 Knowing Jesus Christ Now you can understand why the great Jewish prophet John the Baptist saw Jesus and declared, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”5 His agonizing death on a cross is the greatest act of sacrificial love in all of history, and this is why Jesus is The Way and He is the only way to come to God the Father for eternal life. Jesus revealed the truth about God’s nature: God is love. As a result, all of God’s commands are teaching us how to love God; and how to love our neighbors as ourselves. You could never lust for a man’s wife if you truly loved the man and his wife as you love yourself. If you love in truth you will treat others in the same way you want to be treated. Jesus also revealed the truth about man’s nature. His life and His words exposed not only the sins of men, but also their slavery to sin. Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.”7 And since all of us have sinned, we are all slaves to sin. If you really desire to live by the truth, Jesus will bring you out of spiritual darkness into His marvelous light. He will reveal the wickedness of your past sin, but He will also fill you with His love and forgiveness. Jesus also said, “I am the truth.” God the Father sent Jesus to teach us how to worship God in spirit and in truth. From His life and His words we learn the truth and we learn the spirit of God’s commands. For example, Jesus said: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”6 God wants you and I to obey both in spirit and in truth, so true obedience must begin in our inner thoughts. The Bible teaches that we need a new nature, and this is why Jesus said: “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God un- less he is born again.”8 When we are born again God comes to live within us giving us a new nature. We are freed from our slavery to sin and filled with a love for God and for others. Only our Creator has the power to transform our lives!
