27 Jesus Tells You What to Do The yoke gave the master control over his oxen so he could do work that was necessary for his livelihood. The yoke became symbolic of the authority and laws of religious and civic leaders. But the term “yoke” often was very negative referring to the yoke of oppressive laws under harsh religious leaders or referring to the yoke of slavery or high taxes under dictatorial civic leaders. In contrast to these harsh leaders Jesus says, “I am gentle and lowly in heart.” Who is this One who asks you to take His yoke? This is the all powerful Son of God who humbled Himself and died in your place. No one ever loved you like Jesus! When you take up the yoke of this gentle and humble Master He will lead you to your life work. Jesus will teach you your part in bringing eternal life to others. Unlike the oppressive yokes of many leaders, Jesus says, “My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” His yoke is easy because His work is tailor-made for your abilities. And His burden is light because Jesus will give you His power and His joy as you work. Jesus says, “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” If you are sick and tired of going your own way, Jesus is inviting you to come to Him personally that you may know Him (John 17:3). If you know Jesus and His forgiveness for your sins, He will bring real peace and rest to your soul.
